Google’s “Eight Good Behaviors” – Part 3

If there’s ever been any constants in the technology world, these are them.  Time and time again, I see people and teams get derailed when these principles aren’t followed.

3. Express interest in team members’ success and personal well-being.

As a leader, one of the most important things you can do is to express interest in your team members’ success and well-being. This shows that you care about them as individuals, and it can go a long way in motivating them to do their best work.

Here are some specific ways to express interest in your team members:

  • Set aside time for regular one-on-one meetings. This is a great opportunity to get to know your team members on a personal level, and to discuss their goals and challenges.
  • Ask questions about their work and their career aspirations. Show that you’re interested in what they’re doing, and that you’re invested in their success.
  • Be supportive and encouraging. Let your team members know that you believe in them, and that you’re there to help them succeed.
  • Be flexible and understanding. Everyone has different circumstances, so be willing to accommodate their needs.
  • Celebrate their successes. When your team members achieve something, take the time to recognize their hard work.

It’s also important to remember that showing interest in your team members’ well-being is just as important as showing interest in their success. This means being mindful of their workload, their stress levels, and their overall health.

Here are some specific ways to show interest in your team members’ well-being:

  • Check in with them regularly. Ask them how they’re doing, and if there’s anything you can do to help.
  • Be understanding if they need to take some time off. Everyone needs a break sometimes, so don’t be afraid to give them the flexibility they need.
  • Encourage them to take care of themselves. This means eating healthy, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly.
  • Create a positive work environment. A positive work environment is one where people feel supported and respected.

When you express interest in your team members’ success and well-being, you’re creating a more positive and productive work environment. Your team members will be more motivated to do their best work, and they’ll be more likely to stay with your team for the long term.

Here are some additional tips for expressing interest in your team members’ success and well-being:

  • Be genuine. Your team members will be able to tell if you’re being fake, so make sure your interest is genuine.
  • Be consistent. Don’t just express interest when things are going well. Show that you care about your team members’ success and well-being even when things are tough.
  • Be specific. Don’t just say “I’m interested in your success.” Tell your team members what specifically you’re interested in, such as their goals, their career aspirations, or their personal development.
  • Be supportive. Let your team members know that you’re there to support them, both professionally and personally.

By following these tips, you can show your team members that you care about them and their success. This will create a more positive and productive work environment, and it will help your team members achieve their goals.
